Is this what you are looking at?
Weight and timing narrow it down fast. Daytime activity overhead usually means squirrels; heavy movement after dark, often with vocal noises, suggests raccoons. Scratching confined to a wall void can be a squirrel that fell in and cannot climb out, which is both a welfare issue and a smell problem if it is not resolved.
Also called: raccoons, squirrels, opossums, attic animals, nuisance wildlife
Where they actually are
Animals enter at the roofline: a lifted shingle, a rotted fascia board, an unscreened gable vent or a gap where the roof meets a dormer. They return to the same entry, and a female may return to a known site to give birth.
- attics and soffits
- chimneys
- wall voids
- crawl spaces and under decks
- garage rafters
- gable and ridge vents
Why the can from the hardware store does not work
Sealing the hole while an animal is inside traps it, which ends badly for the animal and worse for the house. Spring and early summer carry the additional problem of dependent young somewhere in the insulation, which is also when most wildlife is legally protected in some form.
What a contractor actually does
A wildlife contractor will identify the species, check for young, remove the animals using methods appropriate to local regulations, then seal the entry points and advise on the contaminated insulation that usually needs attention afterwards.
Wildlife in an attic causes damage quickly, to insulation, wiring and ceilings, and the situation gets considerably more complicated if there are young. Worth calling the same day.
Questions people ask on the call
- Can I just block the hole?
- Not until you know what is inside and whether there are young. Sealing an animal in is the most common and most expensive mistake.
- Day noise or night noise, does it matter?
- Yes, it is one of the most useful things you can report. Squirrels are active in daylight, raccoons after dark.
- Will it leave on its own?
- An attic is warm, dry and safe from predators, so it has little reason to. Known sites also tend to be reused.
Where wildlife removal come up most
Climate decides a great deal of this. These are cities in the regions where this one is among the most common calls.
