Is this what you are looking at?
Paper wasp nests are open and umbrella shaped, usually under eaves or railings. Yellowjackets often nest in the ground or inside a wall void, and the giveaway is steady traffic in and out of a single small gap. Hornet nests are large, enclosed and papery. Steady two way traffic at one point means an active nest rather than passing insects.
Also called: yellowjackets, hornets, paper wasps
Where they actually are
A queen starts a nest in spring and the colony grows through summer, which is why a nest nobody noticed in June is suddenly a problem in August. Yellowjackets get noticeably more aggressive late in the season.
- under eaves and soffits
- inside wall voids
- in the ground near foundations
- attic vents
- behind shutters
- in dense shrubs near doorways
Why the can from the hardware store does not work
Aerosol cans sold for this sell a range that assumes a clean shot at an exposed nest. A nest inside a wall void cannot be reached that way, and a partial hit provokes the colony. Most stings happen during an attempt that did not work rather than from the nest itself.
What a contractor actually does
A contractor will identify the species and locate the actual nest, which is often not where the traffic appears to be, then treat it with protective equipment and remove it where the structure allows. Wall void nests are treated through the entry point rather than by opening the wall.
A nest at a doorway or in a wall void near a bedroom is a genuine safety issue, more so if anyone in the house is allergic. This is a same day problem.
Questions people ask on the call
- Is it bees or wasps?
- It matters, because honey bees are usually relocated rather than treated. Bees look furry and thickset; wasps look smooth and narrow waisted.
- Can I treat it at night?
- Colonies are less active after dark, which is why that advice circulates, but it also means working on a ladder in the dark next to insects that sting. The risk is rarely worth it.
- The nest looks small. Can I wait?
- Nests grow fastest in mid to late summer, and a small nest in June is a large one in August. Small is the easiest time to deal with it.
Where wasps and hornets come up most
Climate decides a great deal of this. These are cities in the regions where this one is among the most common calls.
